Public safety director to retire, Albert Lea proposes changes to police and fire departments

After 28 years of dedicated service to Albert Lea, Public Safety Director J.D. Carlson has announced his intention to retire, effective June 27, 2025. He started as a patrol officer in 1997 and moved up to lieutenant and deputy director before taking the director position in 2018.

To spur development of more housing options for our workforce, the City of Albert Lea, Freeborn County and School District 241 have agreed to refund – or abate – a portion of property taxes for construction or improvement of housing in Albert Lea.

Referendum a win for Albert Lea rec facilities

With overwhelming support from voters, Albert Lea is working to improve the City Arena, Aquatic Center and Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. In addition, the city plans to add public restrooms near the Splash Pad at the north end of Broadway Avenue.

Salary Statement: Minnesota state law (Chapter 156 of the Session Laws of 2005) requires that “a city or county with a population of more than 15,000 must annually notify its residents of the positions and base salaries of its three highest-paid employees.” For the City of Albert Lea, titles and salaries as of Jan. 1, 2024, are: City Manager, $163,820.80; Director of Public Safety $148,595.20; and Director of Public Works/City Engineer $144,268.80.
